Portfolio

This portfolio showcases some of our finest work. We hope you'll take a moment to browse through and see the quality and wide range of projects we've produced.

We like to describe what we do as “building snowflakes.” Almost every project we build is custom work. We don’t manufacture a lot of anything, but we will make one of almost everything.

Each project is unique. This is the essence of producing exciting theatrical scenery, and it is the driving force that distinguishes us from most of our business associates.

We have constructed displays for theme restaurants by providing vignette scenes with fake fire and water effects. We built a portable stage for Irish dancers in one of the Gaslamp restaurants which is capable of being assembled and disassembled quickly and easily (by the busboy), and able to be stored concisely.

Our scenic artists have painted murals in lobbies, restored artwork on cruise ships, and painted Antarctic scenes for Sea World.

When J.J., the California grey whale, was scheduled for release from Sea World, park officials contacted us. Their plan was to display the sling used to transport J.J. to the ocean in the park after his release. Now here is a classic snow flake. Our task was to flame proof the sling so that it complied with California State Fire codes, and withstood being submerged in salt water. More importantly, we had to make certain that the chemicals used did not irritate or harm the whale!

These examples, and many more like them, help to illustrate the diverse nature of the work done at the San Diego Opera Scenic Studios.
